CRRA in the News

"Digitization Project Preserving Century of Catholic Newspapers, Newsfeeds," by Mark Pattison
Catholic News Service
February 1, 2017

On February 1, 2017, the CNS News published an article about the CRRA's Catholic News Archive. The article was subsequently picked up and published in other places, including: The Catholic Telegraph, Catholic Daily, Democratic Underground, and CathNews (of Australia). Katherine Nuss and her colleague Mark Pattison, both of the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), and Amy Cooper Cary, of Marquette, did a great job in reporting on progress to date. It is wonderful too to recognize the financial support from the USCCB.

Bringing the Created Toward the Creator: Liturgical Art and Design After Vatican II

Fifty years after the Second Vatican Council led to priests celebrating Mass in English, we are experiencing a renewed interest in understanding the past and continuing impact of Vatican II on liturgical art and design. Rev. Mark Francis, CSV, a noted liturgical theologian with a special interest in the relationship between liturgy and culture, is the keynote speaker. He will open the symposium with observations about liturgy and worship from the perspective of the worshippers and set the stage for the following presentations and panels. The program brings together an outstanding array of liturgical theologians, artists, curators and scholars to reflect on the changes in parish liturgical celebrations, the work of liturgical artists and resources they value in their study and teaching. Plan now to join your CRRA colleagues in conversations about your institutional initiatives, and CRRA accomplishments and priorities for the coming year.

CRRA Symposium: Chicago, IL

DePaul University
October 15-16, 2012

On October 15-16, 2012, DePaul University hosted the annual Catholic Research Resources Alliance (CRRA) Symposium, entitled “Nurturing the ‘Spirit of Perfect Charity’: Libraries and Archives at the Intersection of Service and Scholarship in Catholic Social Justice Studies.” Founded in 2008, the CRRA is a consortium of 35 institutions holding significant library and/or archival collections relevant to Catholic Studies, including colleges, universities, seminaries, religious orders, and other church offices. In addition to providing digital access to an increasingly robust collection of rare, unique and/or uncommon materials in libraries, seminaries, special collections and archives through its “Catholic Portal” project, the CRRA supports collaboration among member institutions through joint programs and projects, including the Symposium.

DePaul University President Dennis H. Holtschneider, C.M., welcomed almost 100 Symposium attendees from institutions across the United States and abroad with his thoughts on the unique character of the Catholic commitment to social justice and the role of libraries and archives in promoting the work of those who study it. “Libraries and archives,” Fr. Holtschneider concluded, “enable scholars, enable voices to be heard, enable people to be moved . . .”

The 2012 CRRA Symposium focused on the study of Catholic Social Justice, and highlighted relevant collections at DePaul University, Loyola University of Chicago, Marquette University, and others. The Symposium also included discussion of the CRRA’s Catholic Newspapers Project and the integration of special collections materials in undergraduate education, including the use by DePaul University Professor Susan Dumbleton’s of the papers of Sr. Helen Prejean in her course, “Dead Man Walking: An American Story.” The Symposium also included a keynote address by DePaul’s Michael Baxter, Visiting Associate Professor of Catholic Studies, and a viewing and discussion of the film, “A Question of Habit” with Loyola University of Chicago Professor of Communication Bren Ortega Murphy.

The 2012 Catholic Research Resources Alliance Symposium was co-sponsored by the DePaul University Library, the DePaul University Office of Mission and Values, and by the CRRA.
